Taekwondo Southport — Frequently Asked Questions

Below are the questions we are asked most often about Taekwondo in Southport. Still not sure about something? Get in touch or call [PHONE] — we are always happy to help.

What age can my child start Taekwondo?

Children can start with us from age four in our Little Dragons / Tots class, which is built around games and fun while teaching the basics. From age seven they move into our Juniors group.

Am I too old to start Taekwondo?

No. Adults of every age start with us, including complete beginners in their thirties, forties and beyond. You train at your own pace and build fitness and flexibility as you go — it is genuinely never too late.

How much does it cost?

Your first trial class is free. After that we offer simple, transparent membership options; exact prices are confirmed by the gym ([PRICE — TBC]). There are no hidden fees.

What should I wear to my first class?

Just loose, comfortable clothing you can move and stretch in, plus a bottle of water. Taekwondo is trained in bare feet, so no special footwear is needed.

Do I need a uniform to start?

Not for your free trial — everyday sportswear is fine. Once you decide to join, you will get a proper dobok (Taekwondo uniform), which is a one-off cost ([PRICE — TBC]).

Is Taekwondo safe for children?

Yes. Classes are run in a safe, controlled environment with age-appropriate activities, and any sparring is light, gradual and protected with gear. Parents are welcome to stay and watch.

Are your instructors DBS-checked and first-aid trained?

Our instructors are [CONFIRM] DBS-checked and first-aid trained, and we are happy to talk through our full safeguarding arrangements with any parent who asks.

How long does it take to get a black belt?

With consistent, regular training it typically takes somewhere in the region of three to five years to reach 1st dan black belt. There is no shortcut — which is exactly why it means so much.

What is the difference between ITF and WT (Olympic) Taekwondo?

The ITF follows General Choi Hong Hi’s lineage and uses tul patterns; World Taekwondo (WT) governs the Olympic sport, uses Taegeuk poomsae and Olympic-style sparring. Our school teaches [SYSTEM — TBC].

Do you do sparring, and is it full contact?

Yes, we spar — but it is controlled, rule-based and protected with gear, ranging from light point sparring upwards depending on grade. Beginners are introduced to it gradually.

What is the difference between Taekwondo and karate or kickboxing?

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that is especially known for its kicking, its patterns and its colour-belt grading and tenets. Karate is Japanese with a different stance and technique emphasis, while kickboxing is a fitness-focused striking sport without the traditional grading syllabus or patterns.

How often are gradings?

Coloured-belt gradings usually take place every few months, giving students a steady series of goals to work towards. Your instructor will only enter you when you are ready.

Can parents watch the class?

Absolutely. Parents are welcome to stay and watch, which many find reassuring — especially for younger children settling in.

Do classes run during the school holidays?

Yes. Our classes run year-round with continuity, including through the school holidays. There are no long breaks, so children and adults can keep training and progressing all year.

Do children earn anything beyond belts?

Yes — our club is a UK Children’s University learning destination, so school-age children earn Children’s University credits (Passport-to-Learning hours) towards graduation while they train.

Where are you and which areas do you serve?

We are based in Southport ([ADDRESS]) and welcome students from across the area, including Birkdale, Churchtown and Ainsdale, as well as Formby, Ormskirk and Crosby.

How do I book a free trial?

Use the booking form on our Free Trial or Contact page, or call us on [PHONE]. We will confirm a class that suits you and get you booked in.

Still have questions?

If we have not covered it here, just ask. You might also find what you need on our kids' Taekwondo page, our belts & grading guide, or our beginner's guide. When you are ready, book a free trial or browse the class timetable. Prefer to talk? Call [PHONE].
